Breaking Leg News: Valentino Rossi Has One

August 31, 2017 John Burns 0

Various reports in from Italy are indicating the factory-Yamaha nine-time MotoGP champ has broken his tib/fib in an off-road accident, which if true, spells the end of Rossi’s run at a tenth championship this year. 2017 has so far been the closest, most-thrilling championship ever in the premier class, with Rossi lately ascendant and just 26 points behind championship leader Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati) with six rounds remaining.

Surely just a bad dream? Sounds like reality. Our source inside Yamaha USA says he’s afraid the rumors are true. A release from MoviStar Yamaha says Rossi was taken to hospital for a check-up, and a full medical bulletin will be issued in due course.

Fingers crossed.

Confederate Having Blow-Out Sale, Going All Electric!

August 31, 2017 John Burns 0

That’s right, well no it’s not. Confederate’s Matt Chambers was offering the discount to those attending the Quail rally a couple weeks ago – from $155,000 to $150,000. At the rally, Charles Fleming of the Los Angeles Times also reported that Confederate will be ditching its lately more-controversial-than-ever name, and possibly going into collaboration with Zero Motorcycles. Read Fleming’s whole story here.

New World Speed Records On Scooters

August 31, 2017 admin 0

You don’t have to go 400 mph to set new land-speed records! Pirelli, in cooperation with the Moto Club Benelli and Malossi, set six new scooter speed records on the Bonneville Salt Flats using new Diablo Rosso scooter tires.

Begin Press Release

Pirelli has helped establish six Scooter World Speed Records at the famous Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah by supporting the incredible Moto Club Benelli adventure. Mounted on Pirelli’s new DIABLO ROSSO™ Scooter tires, the Benelli model 491 scooter with custom graphics by Aldo Drudi, was carefully prepared by Bologna-based performance company, Malossi, using their 50, 85 and 100cc RC-one engine configurations further enhanced by famous two-stroke guru, Jörg Möller.

The passionate mastermind behind the “Bologna to Bonneville” project, Engineer Fabio Fazi, rode the Malossi-powered Benelli to the first two records achieved on Sunday, August 27 in the 50cc category. Fazi, who is an FIM Bureaux Technical Commission member and a proud affiliate of the Moto Club Benelli, reached a top speed of 114.823 km/h (71.347 mph) across 1 kilometer and 71.294 mph (114.737 km/h) across 1 mile, both speeds representing an average of two runs in both directions.

“I had been to Bonneville just as a spectator, but as a participant you learn how to know the hardships,” said Fabio Fazi. “I am very happy to have personally achieved the record in the 50cc category. The scooter performed great and now, after the victory, we only look forward to returning with the same machine to beat our own record.”

The next four World Records were set on Wednesday, 30 August, by former World and Italian Superbike rider and now Sky Italia MotoGP™ Commentator, Mauro Sanchini. While Sanchini flew direct to the USA from his commentary box at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, England, Malossi technicians prepared the 85 and 100cc engines ready for the Italian’s arrival. Sanchini, who started his career racing scooters for Malossi in the 1990s, made an emotional return to Malossi to set four World Records with a speed of 133.002 km/h (82.643 mph) across 1 kilometre and 82.436 mph (132.668 km/h) across 1 mile for the 85cc and 142.088 km/h (88.289 mph) and 88.181 mph (141.914 km/h) respectively for the 100cc.

“I am delighted for the great results we have achieved,” said Mauro Sanchini at the end of the record-breaking day. “It has been a great experience in a place that every biker must experience at least once in life. Thanks to Pirelli, Malossi and Benelli and all the guys of the team for their efforts in making all the necessary changes for this strange track. When you ride on salt you really understand the challenge, which adds even more value to the records we’ve reached. Now the challenge is to improve the result!”

Confirming the sports character of the new Pirelli DIABLO ROSSO™ range for scooters, the new tyres performed perfectly at high speeds across the long, flat dried salt lake, enabling three records across the flying kilometer and three across the flying mile. Testing Department Director of Pirelli Moto, Salvo Pennisi, who had accepted the original challenge from Moto Club Benelli, commented: “Chasing World Records is not new to Pirelli. Since 2000 we have achieved 21 World Records and with these six records we will enrich our haul! We were requested to participate in this adventure and immediately agreed. The timing was perfect considering the fact that this year we introduced the new DIABLO ROSSO™ Scooter tyres and we were confident that their performance could play a vital role in achieving this challenging and passionate goal.”

US-Made Motul Twin Line, V-Twin-Specific Oils Announced

August 31, 2017 Press Release 0

We expect the Motul Twin line of oil to be of the same high quality of all the Motul products we’ve sampled in the past.

Begin Press Release:

Motul Unveils USA-Made TWIN Oil Line for Yesterday and Today’s Twins

In collaboration with former National Champion Roland Sands, Motul creates an engine oil for V-Twins and Twins of all kinds

Cypress, California – Motul, the leader in synthetic oil technology, announced today the TWIN line – a 100 percent synthetic line of products designed to achieve a new level of performance and protection for V-Twins and twins of all kinds. Developed specifically for V-Twins, Café Racers and cruisers found on the canyon roads and highways of North America, the TWIN line will be made in the USA with USA-sourced raw materials.

“North America has the largest population of Twins in the world – nearly one out of every two bikes are powered by a twin engine,” said Guillaume Pailleret, President of Motul USA. “We considered the growing number of vintage and classic bikes that are being restored and modified, and decided it was time for us to develop a product to support these riders. The Motul TWIN line of products utilizes all of our expertise of ester-based synthetic oils and adapts it for use in modern and vintage twin-cylinder engines.”

Motul TWIN line products and features:

Motul TWIN 20w50 engine oil is designed for high-performance street motorcycles, using a motorcycle-specific additive system which is developed to withstand extreme pressure and high heat and results in exceptional wear and thermal protection – even under extreme conditions. It is also compatible with all catalytic converters and oxygen sensors.

Motul TWIN 75w90 Gear Oil is a super heat-stable GL-5 transmission oil perfect for 4-speed, 5-speed and 6-speed transmission and gearboxes. Designed to go the distance required by modern maintenance schedules, this gear oil delivers increased protection for gearbox components and exceptionally smooth shifting. Due to its fully synthetic base oils, it can handle much higher running temperatures when compared to other gear oils.

Motul TWIN Primary Chaincase Oil and Motul TWIN Gear & Chaincase oil for Sportsters is 100 percent synthetic with Ester and uses a Motul-developed motorcycle additive system which provides excellent protection for primary drive chains, sprockets, clutches and baskets against wear. These gear oils deliver exceptionally smooth shifting and wet clutch grip even under harsh conditions.

Roland Sands – former AMA road race champion and founder of Roland Sands Design – drew upon decades of experience racing and rebuilding motorcycle engines to assist in the development of the TWIN line.

“The TWIN line has been developed with the custom and high-performance Twin cylinder motorcycle in mind,” said Sands.  “We build quite a few twins every year and race high-performance twins on the street and dirt. Putting these machines though high stress environments in varying weather conditions, and using the expertise of Motul, we’ve developed a great collection of lubricants to meet the needs of both the hard riding and hands-on bike owner.”

ABOUT MOTUL

Motul is also recognized as the specialist in synthetic lubricants. Top 1 Ack Attack 400 mph Effort Soldiers On Despite Logistical Challenges

August 31, 2017 Press Release 0

It sounds like Top 1 Ack Attack had to soldier on in the face of many challenges

Begin Press Release:

TOP 1 ACK ATTACK IS STILL THE WORLD’S FASTEST MOTORCYCLE

Assault On 400 mph At The Top Of The World Landspeed Trial… To Be Continued

San Mateo, CA — From the beginning, the Top of the World Landspeed Trial was a pioneering achievement and a logistical challenge of epic proportions. Chief Engineer Mike Akatiff and the world’s fastest motorcyclist Rocky Robinson took the TOP 1 ACK ATTACK to the rarified air of Salar De Uyuni salt flats high in the Bolivian Andes with the express goal of exceeding 400 mph and breaking the team’s own LSR mark of 376.363 mph set in 2010.

“No wind, perfect salt… No reason it wouldn’t go over 400 mph,” said Akatiff when they finally were able to unload the 20-foot, twin-engined streamliner. No reason except for Bolivian salt gremlins.

On August 5th at 1 a.m. —  three weeks later than scheduled, the trailer containing the ACK ATTACK finally arrived. “Our container arrived 3 days into the Top Of The World Land Speed Trial’s very limited window so we were only able to run 2 days and simply didn’t have enough time to sort out our complex machine,” added Rocky Robinson. “We didn’t achieve our goal, but still have a lot to be thankful about.” While they didn’t go 400 mph, Robinson says they did go faster than their own existing Land Speed Record.

“Our best pass we ran 378 mph before blowing off the turbo manifold a half mile before the lights,” he said. “I coasted dead stick through the lights at 338 mph. Another pass we shredded a rear tire and then had another manifold blow out. I even overshot the pits one time by a 1/4 mile and stopped in the middle of the rough, unprepared salt.” There was also the run where the outrigger wheels failed to engage and the ACK ATTACK tipped over as Robinson coasted into the pits.

“We went 5,000 miles to one of more remote places on the planet in an attempt to raise the bar on our own record,” said Top 1 President Joe Ryan. “Unfortunately, time and logistical challenges prevented us from attaining our goal of surpassing the magical 400mph (643 kph) barrier on the last try, but we still have the record and TOP1 will forever be remembered for having the guts to make the commitment to bring attention to perhaps the next major venue for land speed racing.”

At nearly 12,000 feet (3,656 meters) above sea level, the Salar de Uyuni offers prefect salt conditions, no wind and miles of run-off room that LSR teams in Bonneville can only dream about. And several records were set at the Top Of The World Landspeed Trial, including Al Lamb riding his turbocharged Honda CBR 1000 to 265.8 mph and Nick Genet piloting a naturally aspirated Aprilia RSV4 with the fairing removed to a 192.8 mph record.

“Thank you to our general and leader Mike Akatiff,” said TOP 1 President, Joe Ryan. “You are my mentor and inspiration. I cannot be more proud of the entire team. We didn’t get our record but I feel very strongly we have a great story to share with the world!”

The record set by TOP 1 ACK ATTACK in 2010 still stands… for now. To be the best, you have to beat the best and Mike Akatiff’s ACK ATTACK is still the best with a motorcycle land-speed record of 376.363 mph. “This is historic,” said Akatiff. “Coming to Boliva is something I’ll never forget!”

Ducati Desmosedici Stradale V-4 Engine to be Unveiled Sept. 7

August 31, 2017 Dennis Chung 0

Confirming our earlier suspicions, Ducati announced it would present its new V-4 engine Sept. 7 at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli ahead of MotoGP round in Rimini, Italy.

Ducati released the image below, showing a line of Desmodromic cam follower and revealing the name “Desmosedici Stradale.”

“Stradale” is Italian for “road,” so we think the name refers to the V-4 engine’s nomenclature, as the name “Desmosedici” describes a desmodromic system with 16 valves. Or perhaps this will be Ducati’s name for its street model of its MotoGP bike, as Desmosedici D16RR was the name for Ducati’s limited-production V-4 streetbike from 2007, a bike that was also first revealed at Misano.

Italian V-4 Literbike Shootout: Aprilia RSV4 Factory vs. Ducati Desmosedici RR

Ducati continues to use the phrase “the sound of the new era,” so we should expect to hear the V-4 engine running at Misano (that is, if you haven’t already heard it from this spy video of Ducati’s V-4 being test at Misano).

Check back with us on Motorcycle.com on Sept. 7 for more information on the Ducati Desmosedici Stradale.

Yamaha Video Teases New Touring Model for Sept. 6

August 30, 2017 admin 0

Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA introduced a new “Journey Further” video today that foreshadows the introduction of a new touring motorcycle that will be unveiled on September 6, 2017, at 7:30 a.m. PDT on the company’s website.

The video is appropriately vague so as to not reveal the motorcycle, but we are given enough info to know that it will be a cruiser-style bike with touring aspirations, perhaps something built on the new Venture platform. This is also separate from a different teaser campaign Yamaha has been running for a new side-by-side, which some other outlets falsely assumed was for a new adventure bike.

In the new video, we are shown interviews with two riders who have put many miles on their Star Raider and Road Star, and they speak about the feeling of freedom they get from riding motorcycles.

“Not until we escape can we truly be found,” reads the video’s title overlays. “Prepare to… Elude the elements. Elude conformity. Elude everything else. Journey further.”

The repetition of the word elude makes us think the new model might be called Eluder, and that guess is backed up by a trademark filing Yamaha made last year.

“We were thrilled to introduce a new transcontinental touring model earlier this year with the unveiling of the Star Venture, and we are looking forward to the exciting introduction of another new model in this luxury motorcycle segment,” said Derek Brooks, Yamaha’s Motorcycle Product Line Manager. “Although details elude the video we posted today, we encourage everyone to check out our website on September 6 as we continue our journey.”
